This textile explores my quest for the peace and relief that is silence within my mind. Between my adhd and anxiety my head is never a quiet place. I am always in pursuit of the things that help me become calm and relaxed enough that everything can truly go silent. For me, this is happiness and freedom. The places I find this true peace are most often in nature (represented by the waves of purple) and human touch/connection (represented by the hands holding each other). That being said, I also wanted to represent how adhd and anxiety are often things that are seen as needing to be “fixed” or “silenced” via medication or otherwise. Well-meaning people often try to “help” by muting the effects of adhd and/or anxiety, but many with adhd and/or anxiety feel that this means losing their sparkle, their creativity, or the part of themselves that makes them special/unique. I hope this textile effectively communicates the tension between what I as an adhd/anxious person ask for in contrast with what society often offers in return.
